ChatGPT by OpenAI
ChatGPT is a generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot developed by OpenAI and launched in 2022. It is based on the advanced GPT-4 large language model (LLM). ChatGPT is capable of producing human-like conversational responses, allowing users to refine and direct discussions according to their preferred length, format, style, detail, and language. Its introduction has significantly contributed to the AI boom, resulting in substantial investments and heightened public interest in the field of artificial intelligence. However, some experts have raised concerns regarding the potential for ChatGPT and similar technologies to displace human intelligence, facilitate plagiarism, or propagate misinformation.
By January 2023, ChatGPT emerged as the fastest-growing consumer software application in history, amassing over 100 million users within two months. This rapid adoption has played a role in increasing OpenAI’s valuation to $86 billion. The launch of ChatGPT prompted the release of competing products, including Gemini, Claude, Llama, Ernie, and Grok. Additionally, Microsoft introduced Copilot, initially leveraging OpenAI’s GPT-4 technology. In May 2024, a partnership between Apple Inc. and OpenAI was announced, integrating ChatGPT into the Apple Intelligence feature across Apple operating systems. As of July 2024, ChatGPT’s website ranks among the top ten most-visited sites globally.
ChatGPT is built on OpenAI’s proprietary series of generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) models and is specifically fine-tuned for conversational applications through a combination of supervised learning and reinforcement learning from human feedback. Each user prompt and response is considered sequentially as context throughout the conversation. Initially released as a free research preview, ChatGPT has since transitioned to a freemium model due to its popularity. Users on the free tier can access GPT-4, while subscription tiers—”Plus,” “Team,” and “Enterprise”—offer additional features such as DALL-E 3 image generation and enhanced usage limits.
Languages
ChatGPT operates primarily in American English but is also capable of functioning in a variety of languages and dialects, with varying levels of accuracy.
In 2022, OpenAI met with Icelandic President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson to discuss collaboration on language preservation. By 2023, OpenAI partnered with a team of 40 Icelandic volunteers to enhance ChatGPT’s conversational capabilities in Icelandic, reflecting Iceland’s commitment to preserving its language.
A comparative analysis conducted by PCMag journalists assessed the translation capabilities of ChatGPT, Google’s Bard, and Microsoft Bing against Google Translate. Bilingual speakers of seven languages—Polish, French, Korean, Spanish, Arabic, Tagalog, and Amharic—participated in a blind test, leading to the conclusion that ChatGPT outperformed both Google Translate and other chatbots.
Research conducted by Japanese scholars evaluated the translation abilities of ChatGPT (based on GPT-4), Bing, Bard, and DeepL for Japanese to English translations. The findings indicated that ChatGPT delivered superior translations, particularly in capturing contextual nuances, surpassing DeepL’s performance.
In December 2023, the Albanian government entered into an agreement with OpenAI to utilize ChatGPT for expedited translation of European Union documents and to analyze the requirements for Albania’s accession to the EU.
In August 2024, a representative from OpenAI’s Asia Pacific division visited Taiwan, demonstrating ChatGPT’s proficiency in Mandarin Chinese. While its capabilities were praised, the AI’s ability to produce content in a Taiwanese accent was noted as suboptimal.
GPT Store
In January 2024, OpenAI launched the GPT Store, a marketplace for custom ChatGPT chatbots known as GPTs. Originally slated for a November 2023 launch, the store opened with over 3 million custom chatbots developed using OpenAI’s GPT Builder system. Notably, the development of these chatbots does not require programming skills. However, within two days of its launch, numerous “virtual girlfriend” bots appeared, which contravened OpenAI’s terms of service.
GPT-4
OpenAI released its GPT-4 model on March 14, 2023, marking a significant advancement over GPT-3.5, though it retained some of the same limitations. Some of GPT-4’s enhancements were anticipated by OpenAI prior to training, while others were less predictable due to complexities in downstream scaling laws. OpenAI showcased capabilities for video and image inputs for GPT-4, though these features remain inaccessible to the general public. Technical specifications, including the model size, have not been disclosed.
The ChatGPT Plus subscription service provides access to a GPT-4-powered version of ChatGPT. Microsoft acknowledged that Bing Chat was utilizing GPT-4 even before its official release. In November 2023, OpenAI introduced GPT-4 Turbo, which notably features a significantly larger context window.
GPT-4o
In May 2024, OpenAI launched GPT-4o (“o” for “Omni”), a model that can analyze and generate text, images, and sound. GPT-4o operates at twice the speed and at half the cost of GPT-4 Turbo, and is available to all users within a usage limit, despite its enhanced capabilities compared to the GPT-4 model, which remains a paid subscription. ChatGPT Plus subscribers enjoy a usage limit five times greater than that of free users.
On July 18, 2024, OpenAI released GPT-4o mini, a smaller version of GPT-4o that replaces GPT-3.5 Turbo on the ChatGPT interface. Its API pricing is set at $0.15 per million input tokens and $0.60 per million output tokens, compared to $5 and $15 for GPT-4o.
o1
On September 12, 2024, OpenAI introduced the o1-preview model, designed to tackle more complex problems by allowing additional time for analysis before responding. This model reportedly surpasses GPT-4o in competitive programming, mathematics, and scientific reasoning. According to OpenAI, o1-preview achieved the 89th percentile in Codeforces’ competitive programming contests and scored 83% on an International Mathematics Olympiad qualifying exam, in contrast to GPT-4o’s 13%. o1-preview also demonstrates performance comparable to Ph.D. students in physics, biology, and chemistry. A faster and more cost-effective variant, o1-mini, was subsequently released.
